Poking at old issues

As in sixty-plus yrs of issues, that weren't even mine?
Much of my "family" was destroyed during and
because of WWII. I have two sisters; the one born in 1943, a child of refugees, has only really functioned because of the kindness of strangers.

Literally. My heart always broke when my (our) Mama let tiny bits of memory slip. She was a quiet but fierce introvert.

So, in regards to my family, what's left of it-I never met any grandparents. My mom's father died in 1911; his wife was euthanised in 1945.
My father's parents somehow made it out to the DDR. They dead by the time I was born.

So, given the structure you propose, what am I to look at?
I cannot blame my mother's decades of pain (and she was a resolute person; very smart; knew three alphabets and herbs).
These questions have been part of my approach to my cadets at both the Error Force (LeRoy Jones term) and the two and a half yr tour I got as an exchange officer at West Point.
My exceedingly difficult 1943 vintage sister--who did demonnstrable harm to the bit of family that was left--I ask you: what am I supposed to do with the crud of past creatures?
