Magic Monday

unknownIt's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The image (or lack of same)? At this point I've traced Juliet Ashley's lineage back as far as photos and documentation extend. John Gilbert's other main teacher, Rev. Matthew William Shaw aka Rhodonn Starrus, is a tougher proposition. Born in Pennsylvania, he became a Universalist minister, serving in a church in the Allentown, PA area.  In 1952 he and two other ministers of the Universalist Church, Revs. Omar Zasluchy and Owen Symanski, left the church to protest the upcoming merger between their denomination and the Unitarian Church. (They believed that the Unitarians planned on taking over the congregations,  churches, and bank accounts, and then discarding every element of Universalist teaching and tradition; as it turned out, they were right.) In 1952, the three of them were duly consecrated as bishops by Bishop Robert Monroe of the Liberal Catholic Church, and founded the Universal Gnostic Church (UGC). Rev. Shaw had already founded the Modern Order of Essenes as a healing order associated with his church, and took it with him into the UGC. In 1972 he relocated to the Boulder, CO area where he became a friend and associate of Dr. Juliet Ashley, and received initiation into the orders she headed -- the Order of Spiritual Alchemy, the Holy Order of the Golden Dawn, and the Ancient Order of Druids in America -- while she became active in the Modern Order of Essenes and the Universal Gnostic Church.  John Gilbert described him as a gifted teacher but a strict taskmaster, who demanded the best from his students and usually got it.

I have yet to find a photo of the man, or accurate information on his birth and death dates -- I gather from what John told me that he died sometime in the 1980s. I have also been unable to find much of anything about Bishop Robert Monroe of the LCC -- there were plenty of schisms in the LCC's history, and he apparently ended up on the wrong side of one of them, so he's just a name in a few old lists at this point. I hope to be able to get more information on him, on Matthew Shaw, and on the early history of the UGC as things proceed.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use the link above to access my online tip jar:  PayPal for now, but that'll be replaced by a couple of other options shortly. If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I now have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

Dear JMG,

I hope it’s alright if I share a brief update. A couple of months ago, I shared about some of the experiences I was having while DMing for my middle schooler’s D&D game. You and your gracious readers were kind enough to encourage me write about what I was seeing re: the intersection of RPGs, Jungian psychology, the occult, spirituality, parenting, and more. To that end, I’ve started a blog. I’ve put up an initial post, and hope to update it regularly:

https://thetableyoufearthemost.blogspot.com/2022/11/of-dungeons.html?m=1

I’ve left my name off the blog for now, as I work in an industry where some of what I talk about would be very much frowned upon.

I’d love to chat with anyone interested in pursuing this topic further via guest posts. And if your time permits, JMG, I’d love to interview you at some point to get your thoughts:)

Warmly,
Ryan M.

This week, my theme for morning meditations was Hu Gadarn. Oxen kept wandering into my mind – Hu’s Ychen Bannog, of course. (Theories as to why they might join me for prayers and meditations are welcome, btw.) Might you point me to some reading about them? I found “The Mighty Monster Afang” in Welsh Fairy Tales by William Elliot Griffis over at Gutenberg.org, but I’m still looking for a commentary.
Many thanks!

Guide to Germanic Meter, Poetic Affirmations, Dolmen Arch Earth Banishing

[personal profile] jprussell 2022-11-21 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Good Evening,

To any other Americans, I hope you have an enjoyable Thanksgiving with good food and better company, and a relaxing Buy Nothing Day right after.

To Share: I've started incorporating a bit of poetry into my practice, using traditional Germanic meters. While I don't yet have real poems to share, I did write up a brief guide to using these metrical forms, which includes a few brief examples to illustrate how they work. The guide is mostly so as I write more poetry I can just link to it and say "this is what I followed", but if anyone's interested in having some fun with these forms, hopefully this can be some help: https://jpowellrussell.com/#rules_of_germanish_meter
To Ask: Two hopefully fairly quick questions this week:
1) Last week, you mentioned how writing affirmations worked some of the same skills that are helpful for poetry (concision and working with constraints, for example), and this got me wondering, as I've had poetry on the mind lately: is there any particular value in crafting affirmations as short poems (say, a single line of dactylic hexameter or a brief couplet or the like)?
2) Now that I'm working through the second grade of the Dolmen Arch, I took a look at the version of calling of the Cantrefs and associated banishings given there and have started following those wordings rather than those given in the DMH as I had been doing. I noticed that the banishing for the Fourth Cantref doesn't seem to follow the pattern for the others, and instead matches the DMH version. I came up with a version following the pattern of the first three Cantrefs, but wondered if you have any tips or tweaks:
As given in book: "And with the help of the powers of Earth, I banish from within and around me all unbalanced manifestations of Earth."
My attempt to match other 3 Cantrefs: "And with the help of the powers of Earth, I banish from within and around me and from all my doings all harmful influences and [misleading sensations], and every unbalanced expression of Earth. I banish them far away from me."

As always, thanks so much for your time and effort,
Jeff

Wonderful to see this! I haven't had a chance to read yet, but I've opened it and look forward to doing so soon.

Something that came to mind that I can't believe I didn't share before is a brief work that has been very influential in the "Old School Renaissance" niche of the already niche hobby of D&D: Philotomy's Musings (https://www.grey-elf.com/philotomy.pdf). It's a varied and idiosyncratic take on running the original version of D&D, but the section that caused me to link it is where he talks about "The Dungeon as Mythic Underworld", which I think will prove interesting from a Jungian-informed view.

Good luck and keep posting!
Jeff

Reincarnation of historical figures

(Anonymous) 2022-11-21 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
If everyone reincarnates, does that mean people like Julius Ceaser may walk among us right now? Are there any known cases of people finding out they were famous historical figures in past lives?

One somewhat far-afield angle to consider is looking into commentary on the Elder Futhark rune "Uruz", which means "Aurochs". The aurochs was the wild ancestor of domesticated cattle, and apparently a pretty tough beastie with rather long horns. It was also important to at least Germanic tribes as something you hunted as a test of manhood (and then made drinking horns out of its horns). Likely due to the drinking horn angle, the rune is also associated with wells and vital energy. Some of the details from the episode reminded me of commentary I've read on the rune, and lately I've been finding lots of places where Celtic and Germanic myths cast interesting lights on each other.

Cheers,
Jeff

On 2) Well, for one, it will make a fine theme for meditation, of course :) Secondly, I'll likely use something like "misleading sensations" from above as a starting point and try to find a banishing formula that works as well for Earth as the DA versions for the other gates seem to do.

(Also, apologies, apparently there was a typo in my HTML, which led to everything after "Dolmen Arch" being italicized, which made everything less clear).

Writing, I-Ching

[personal profile] realmscryer 2022-11-21 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Good evening JMG,
Thanks for hosting these sessions.

Questions:
1. Do you have suggestions for learning the I-Ching? Looking online I am finding various approaches.

2. A few weeks ago I asked about discursive meditation and writing. Wow! I switched from free writing and started using themes for my 15 minutes a day of writing. My ability to ask questions during regular meditation jumped a level or two. Though doing a free writing session as well as a themed session might be even better.

Now I am thinking writing fiction scenes might be a great way to help develop my imagination. What do you think?

3. How do Aikido and Wu Style Tai Chi get along energetically with Dolmen Arch practices? I think I saw in earlier posts Shintaido would be okay.

I have other questions but I keep answering them with "write about it and see what comes up!"

Observations:
This weekend I revisited the first branch of the Mabinogion. After nearly two years of the DA, kind of felt like I was reading it for the first time. Maybe with a bit more intuition? A very curious feeling.

Thanks again!

Good morning JMG,

1. I have been listening to your podcasts this weekend, and in your Toth Hermes interview you discuss the material requirements of your systems. At one point the topic comes to dedicated rooms. You mentioned that, should you have a basement then „you have plans“ in a voice that would befit a mad scientist or a lovecraftian wizard. :-) Might you elaborate.

1.b why the basement and not the attic? Is it better to be near the earth?

2. Somehow I have gotten myself with a lot to do in my schedule just now. Druidry+ Job + club activity + side gig. It is a demanding schedule all week long and most of the times it eats in my weekend. What could a DMH practitioner with a daily planetary devotion do to help oneself. I have prayed to Mars for will and to Saturn for concentration. Then just kept doing the practices and rounds.

Best regards, V

1. … got it. ;-)
(1.b) but I imagine this part would not be subject to that rule.

2. thank you. Oh, and any advice, how not to disappoint those two Planets, as to not injure their wrath?

Hi MM community,

I'm the one who asked for prayers last Monday regarding my baby turning in time for birth. I wanted to say thank you very much to all. My bub turned a couple of days after posting! This really is a very special place.

Regarding number 2,

So this has come up before and you've encouraged people who wanted to change the invocation for Earth to match the others to do so. I noticed it myself before seeing these discussions, but I meditated on it and decided the change in wording had something to teach about the role of earth as a mediator between the subjective elements and the objective elements, and kept it as is.

Since this keeps coming up, it has me curious. Is that fine to? Is there something wrong with not changing it to parallel the others?

Dear Ryan M,

It is really great to see you are going forward with this idea! I'll read up yr post and I wish you well!

Hello!

As a rough approximation, how many human lives are required before one can go on to the next stage?

And also, how many earth years may pass before re-incarnating?

Only rough approximations needed. Many thanks!

Hello!

What is your understanding of the body of light?
Is it the next stage for humans?

Many thanks

Thanks very much, Jeff! I’m excited to hear your thoughts and feedback. And I will check out the link ASAP! The title sounds like it’s in exactly the same vein as the direction I went in my first post.

Warmly,
Ryan M.

OP sez -
Thanks, Jeff! That's a good point - and one I should have picked up on earlier.
Do you think buying my hirlas from a Viking supply store is significant?
Also - Are you, our host or the commentariat familiar with "The Hirlas Horn" from Welsh Melodies by Felicia Hemans?

Dear Ryan!
For technical reasons that are currently beyond me I can't post in your blog.
Thank you for writing this, I'll be following eagerly (and finding out how I'll be able to comment) As you might attract readers who are not full blown roleplayers you might consider a glossary with the most used shorthands?
Looking foward to the next posts!
