Magic Monday

unknownIt's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The image (or lack of same)? At this point I've traced Juliet Ashley's lineage back as far as photos and documentation extend. John Gilbert's other main teacher, Rev. Matthew William Shaw aka Rhodonn Starrus, is a tougher proposition. Born in Pennsylvania, he became a Universalist minister, serving in a church in the Allentown, PA area.  In 1952 he and two other ministers of the Universalist Church, Revs. Omar Zasluchy and Owen Symanski, left the church to protest the upcoming merger between their denomination and the Unitarian Church. (They believed that the Unitarians planned on taking over the congregations,  churches, and bank accounts, and then discarding every element of Universalist teaching and tradition; as it turned out, they were right.) In 1952, the three of them were duly consecrated as bishops by Bishop Robert Monroe of the Liberal Catholic Church, and founded the Universal Gnostic Church (UGC). Rev. Shaw had already founded the Modern Order of Essenes as a healing order associated with his church, and took it with him into the UGC. In 1972 he relocated to the Boulder, CO area where he became a friend and associate of Dr. Juliet Ashley, and received initiation into the orders she headed -- the Order of Spiritual Alchemy, the Holy Order of the Golden Dawn, and the Ancient Order of Druids in America -- while she became active in the Modern Order of Essenes and the Universal Gnostic Church.  John Gilbert described him as a gifted teacher but a strict taskmaster, who demanded the best from his students and usually got it.

I have yet to find a photo of the man, or accurate information on his birth and death dates -- I gather from what John told me that he died sometime in the 1980s. I have also been unable to find much of anything about Bishop Robert Monroe of the LCC -- there were plenty of schisms in the LCC's history, and he apparently ended up on the wrong side of one of them, so he's just a name in a few old lists at this point. I hope to be able to get more information on him, on Matthew Shaw, and on the early history of the UGC as things proceed.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use the link above to access my online tip jar:  PayPal for now, but that'll be replaced by a couple of other options shortly. If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I now have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

And don't forget to look up your Pangalactic New Age Soul Signature at CosmicOom.com.

With that said, have at it!

***This Magic Monday is now closed -- as in, no further comments will be put through. See you next week!***

JMG,

In the Way of the Golden Section, you recommend reading from an occult or spiritual book before bedtime. I have been reading through the Tao Te Ching. I actually have two different translations and read the same verse from each one, each night. In doing so, I have found significant differences between the two translations, but I have found value in both and thus figure both are good. Just wondering what translation(s) you read.
This goes for the rest of the MM readers, what translation do you use?

Thank you,

Will1000

I have used Lin Yutang's translation, The Wisdom of Laotse (Modern Library, ©1948, 1976) for almost 50 years now. I have also found Isabella Mears' "tentative translation" (1916; 2nd ed. 1922) worth reading.

a) A while back, someone suggested the ongoing collective freakout we're seeing might be because Pluto is fading out, and forcing us to confront who we really are, and a lot of people are coming unglued as that happens, which you said sounds plausible. I was rereading the old Magic Mondays and stumbled on a question which was unanswered, but which I think is worth asking again: if this is the case, why would the people trying to cling to this sort of delusional worldview be driven insane like this, instead of being drawn towards Neptune?

Hey jmg

I hope I’m not being obnoxious, since I asked before, but I want to ask if you have found anything of worth in solresol yet?

What martial art requires one to manipulate one’s consciousness most similarly to ceremonial magic?

What about of those you’ve practiced?

This got me a bit excited.

I don't think there is a single art that is most similar. There are a number of points of contact between the two, but it varies between martial arts and styles of ceremonial magic.

-Baguazhang is probably the most intensely ceremonial of the martial arts. I don't think it can be practiced effectively without an at least partial opening of the middle pillar. The main mode of practice is walking in a circle and most of the exercises are effectively rituals. Also, the entire structure of the curriculum is built around the same symbolism as one of the main branches of chinese occultism (Bagua / I Ching)

-Any Kata or form can pull double duty as a ritual. Out of idle curiosity, I've tried using forms from Taekwondo with Golden Dawn magic; to good effect. Supreme Banishing Ritual of the Taegeuk... it was a thing.

-The Kuzushi and Stepping drills from Judo have a really intense ritualistic element to them. Some Judoka can banish by going through the Kuzushi sequence. The stepping drill can (done correctly) have an equilibriating effect comparable to the QC.

-It's not really bothered with in modern practice, but older martial arts often had oaths and ceremonies to go along with different grades of teaching. I'm talking both Kung Fu and European Martial Arts; it was an extremely pervasive custom.

I'm just starting to write essays based on my meditations on martial arts as a spiritual path. I'll have things to share eventually.

An interesting effect of any practical martial art is that whatever you imagine yourself to be, upon test with an opponent, you will know the truth of what you actually are. This lesson must be learned over and over in martial arts practice and the learning of this lesson in your physical body is a wonderful aide to your other bodies as you undertake learning magic.

"most similar...??" I don't know.
Personally though, I have experienced significant changes to my consciousness from practicing aikido. My practice is a specific form of Tomiki Aikido that is focused on effectual self defense. The principals of movement and energy exchange combine with the need to maintain one's center and balance, and that combination has been enlightening - shifting my actions and reactions in daily life and in ritual work. I believe that any form of aikido practice would be beneficial to ceremonial magic practice.

I’m flying to see my family for the holidays. I had recent worries about my flights that I’d consider more due to paranoia issues than anything else, but I did a geomantic divination just to check. I did a shield chart on the question, “Will the result of my flights be what I hope they will be,” (after imagining safe entries, take offs, landings, etc.). My results: RW Puella, LW Albus, Judge Carcer. Not a favorable chart, but how concerned should I be? I know Carcer can merely mean delay and not endangerment, but in response to the imaginary scene I envisioned it’s worrying. (If need be, I can drive to family for the holidays, but it would be a day’s drive and quite unexpected).

Robert Malone is quoting Yeats today.

Things certainly seem to be headed in strange directions
