The author's presence of mind is way beyond what I would have been able to muster. I would immediately have become aggresive and even violent, which is why I tend to just remove myself from such situations.
But his approach was much more effective in lodging doubt in people's minds about how 'sane' or 'reasonable' or 'effective' the measures were.
