You've trained me well: as soon as I say this, my first thought upon reading these was "Hold up. That's a binary!" Hmm. Well, one obvious way to make a ternary would be to note that our actions help and hinder others as well as ourselves; which means that those souls that advance faster make a path for others to follow; while those that fall behind can count on help from those further ahead. This maps out with Dion Fortune's tracks of space rather well....
