Magic Monday

Martinez de PasquallyIt's midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. (I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The picture?  I'm working my way through photos of my lineage, focusing on the teachers whose work has influenced me and the teachers who influenced them in turn.
I'm currently tracing my Martinist lineage, and at this point we've reached a genuine man of mystery, Jacques de Livron Joachim de la Tour de la Casa Martinez de Pasqually. Nobody knows when Martinez de Pasqually was born or where he came from; what's known about him is that he showed up in southern France in 1754, taught an extraordinarily rich system of Gnostic esoteric philosophy and practice to a circle of pupils that included Louis-Claude de St.-Martin and Jean-Baptiste Willermoz, and then sailed away to the Caribbean in 1772 and reportedly died there two years later. The image I've posted is one of the very few portraits of the man.

Buy Me A Coffee

Ko-Fi

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

With that said, have at it!

What's in a name?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
How much does the names we give entities matter, and how much connection ties a namesake to them?
From Neil Gaiman's American Gods, to the description of two Erises in another thread, to Lilit summoning in MN (as a baby feminist pagan I was instructed she was protective of the young?) - how much do the texts we write and the syllables we speak align with one entity and not another that shares the name, and is there an effect on people named after gods? What about including characters in fiction?

How many JCs actually exist?

...just curious.

Streetlights Turning Off

(Anonymous) 2023-08-15 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
JMG,
For several years now, when I approach streetlights, they sometimes turn on or turn off. I can understand the ones turning on around me, as they probably are controlled by motion detection sensors, but why would such a light turn off when approached? This has happened to me in different cities, and once when I was on a ghost tour, I was asking the tour guide about such phenom when it happened right in front of us. Spooked everyone. Gave me the shivers. It happens too often to me to be a coincidence. I figure it could be explained away as malfunctioning sensors, but do you think something occult might be going on?

By the way, this happens to me when it’s fully dark outside, not at dusk or dawn, as those times of day do trigger streetlights to go on or off. It also happens at random times in the evening, so it can’t be explained by timers, and I don’t shine a light at the streetlights, and this happens in parks and empty parking lights, so cannot be explained by car headlights. Finally, most of the lights are not near tree branches, so twigs swinging in the wind won’t explain this either. And it’s not caused by bats or insects flying by, either.

I don't think it has anything to do with sensors - my mom and I both did/do this occasionally, including long before any street lights would have had motion sensors, and as JMG said, we've run into other folks who say they have the same thing happen.

Planetary day/hour elections

[personal profile] andrewskeen 2023-08-15 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Good evening Archdruid Emeritus,

Do you happen to know where the emphasis on planetary day and hour in astrological magic came from? Picatrix and most of the medieval sources seem to be very Moon focused, so my guess is it might be an innovation by the Renaissance masters. But I am very confused that a number of very clever and capable people practicing the tradition contemporarily will elect consecrations only looking for planetary day and hour, sometimes while the Moon cannot behold the planet in question at all!

My deepest thanks--again--for hosting and moderating this forum, and for your many excellent books.

Best,
Andrew / Dinjy Lusty Bugbear

I think I get it. Thank you very much!

God is Red

(Anonymous) 2023-08-15 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
So I read your book "The King in Orange" (highly recommend to anyone interested in political magic or the interaction between cultural masses and magic) and you mentioned God is Red in your book so I decided to start reading that book. (Also highly recommend) In the book he says something to the affect that, people don't get a spiritual connection to the land until their grandfathers bones have become the corn you where raised on (very rough paraphrasing I don't have my copy on hand). So I have to ask do you think most non-natives have created a a connection to the land yet as lots of us are 4th/5th generation, or since we don't put effort into honoring the land the connection takes longer and we still don't have it?

Protection

(Anonymous) 2023-08-15 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Is the day and hour of Mars appropriate to begin means seal and place a witch bottle? I'm dealing with physical danger, break ins and repeated harassment. And yes, I'm doing already all the other protective methods you suggest. Thank you.

Ecosophia Prayer List

[personal profile] tunesmyth 2023-08-15 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Here are all of the requests for prayer that have recently appeared across the Ecosophia community. (A printable version of the entire prayer list may be downloaded here.) Please feel free to add any or all of the requests to your own prayers.

If I missed anybody, or if you would like to add a prayer request for yourself or anyone who has given you consent (or for whom a relevant person holds power of consent) to the list, please feel free to leave a message at the first link at the top of this comment.

This week I would like to bring special attention to the following prayer requests.

Nebulous Realms has reason to think they may be in particular physical or spiritual danger for the next couple of weeks (posted 8/7); they request prayers for their personal safety.

Steve T's brother Matt is currently in the hospital after a sudden violent seizure, and his daughter is having extreme panic attacks; they were both in a terrible car accident last fall. Steve asks for prayers for Matt's recovery of health; for the emotional and psychological well-being of the rest of the family, including his wife Megan, his daughter Diana, and his young son Jake; and for the lifting of any spiritual harm afflicting the family.

Freddy, Ganeshling's neighbor's 10 year old son, hasn't spoken since a traumatic hospital stay a few years ago; for Freddy to start speaking again and to help him develop into a functional adult.

Tamanous's friend's brother David got in a terrible motorcycle accident and has been diagnosed as a quadriplegic given the resultant spinal damage; for healing and the positive outcomes of upcoming surgeries and rehabilitation, specifically towards him being able to walk and live a normal life once more.

Lp9's hometown, East Palestine, Ohio, for the safety and welfare of their people, animals and all living beings in and around East Palestine, and to improve the natural environment there to the benefit of all. The reasonable possibility exists that this is an environmental disaster on par with the worst America has ever seen. (Lp9 gives updates here and also here.)

Guidelines for how long prayer requests stay on the list, how to word requests, how to be added to the weekly email list, how to improve the chances of your prayer being answered, and several other common questions and issues, are now to be found at the Ecosophia Prayer List FAQ.

If there are any among you who might wish to join me in a bit of astrological timing, I pray each week for the health of all those with health problems on the list on the astrological hour of the Sun on Sundays, bearing in mind the Sun's rulerships of heart, brain, and vital energies. If this appeals to you, I invite you to join me.

M.P as yoga nidra

(Anonymous) 2023-08-15 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hey jmg

Last Monday you and a commentator floated the idea of visualising the M.P. Ritual before sleep as a “yoga nidra” like practice.

My 2 questions on this are wether anyone else has done this practice, and also should you visualise the LBRP beforehand, just as with performing the ritual awake?

I love Mr. de la Casa Martinez de Pasqually's name.
It's as if he is listing all of his aliases (or his life's itinerary) at once:

Jacques of Livron
Joachim of the Tower of the House Martinez, of Pasqually

(if I read the language aright)

It's a beautiful portrait, too.
