It's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. The picture?  I'm working my way through photos of my lineage, focusing on the teachers whose work has influenced me. Last week's honoree was Israel Regardie, the man who kept the Golden Dawn tradition from ending up in a dumpster like so many other occult traditions in the bleak middle years of the twentieth century.  Regardie's first teacher was George Winslow Plummer, founder and longtime head of the Societas Rosicruciana in America (SRIA), who's already been introduced here. His second, much more famous teacher, however, was Edward Alexander "Aleister" Crowley, self-proclaimed messiah of the New Aeon, mass media-anointed Wickedest Man in the World, and problem child of the early twentieth century British occult scene. Regular readers will know that I'm not a fan, but Crowley had a substantial influence on Regardie and also on a wide range of other occult teachers and their scenes.  Now that all his writings are out of copyright and becoming available for free download on various sites, it'll be interesting to see what happens to his legacy.

1. Relating to the post photo + blurb above, would it be appropriate to joke that the ol' Beast is the Black Sheep of your lineage? ;)

2. I've been comparing and contrasting the descriptions of the various nonphysical beings given in the FHR documents with those describe in your book Monsters. Would it be fair to say that the "nature spirits" in the FHR docs (gnomes, undines, ect.) that one can interact with via element gate scryings might actually be Fays? In the former, the nature spirits are clearly differentiated from elementals, which leads me to cross elementals off my list as to what this spirits might be. The closest description so far as that of the Fay beings. Also, it seems to me that nature spirits are probably etheric beings, given their function in nature.

3. According to the CosDoc schema, which evolutionary line might Fays and/or nature spirits belong to? Ours? Or a totally separate/parallel one?

I’ve asked you previously a question or two about the three forms of spirit, in your Way of the Golden Section. I confess I’m still working on a tangent — the Indian Samkhya system. But I feel certain that the work with spirit in WotGS intersects with knowledge from ancient India.

I want to get back into working with the WotGS, and also trust your advice. So, my question is: does spirit, especially in its “above” form, influence or affect the mind in some way or another? In other words, is the mind made up of spirit, to an extent?

I’m doing some work with Samkhya’s “Mahat” — otherwise known as “intellect”; and I’m thinking there is a connection or parity of mahat with spirit. I asked you previously about the identity of spirit with quintessence, which you confirmed.

Well, it depends very much on what you mean by that evasive word "mind"! In Western occult philosophy it's important to recall the distinction between consciousness and the contents of consciousness. If by "mind" you mean the part of you that thinks, that corresponds to the element of air, just as feeling corresponds to water, willing to fire, and sensing to earth. Consciousness, defined as that which perceives thoughts, feelings, acts of will, and sensations, is different from all these, and corresponds to spirit.

For the past few years and as the world went upside down, I did some good progress in developing my intuition, getting better at ritual and divination and keeping a steady practice as much as I could in order to develop my spirituality. It's not been perfect and certainly not an easy ride with some spooks in the process. Not as easy to come to terms with a wider reality as one might think! I certainly came to magic very eager to experiment the stuff that riddles books and conversations on the occult. When it happened, even at my beginner level, that eagerness went away rather fast! So much for a Mab-like enthusiasm! That's taken time to process and fit into my psyche and my life, but still very much a work in progress and I suspect that might be a life-long task to handle.

I think I must've come here to your corner of the internet almost every week for quite a bit now and I've become acquainted with some of you and have very much enjoyed talking to the author of these strange books and many times, in retrospect, showing too clearly how much work I need to do on myself and my life to match my talk since I jump all over the place. All that has been good for me and certainly a refuge of sorts but something that I had to come to terms this week was that I also have an external life and one that I do not like very much at all and its rather messy. It's an okay life, but it is not what I want.

It is this latter part that presently I have struggled with because I know that there is more to life and there are many, many things that can make my heart and my sense of accomplishment fuller, especially since I have always taken a joy on admiring and looking at the work of 'the big ones' and the ones that have come to be remembered as the best on what they did. Oh, is getting there much harder than what teenage me might have thought. In trying to make myself believe that I can be like that without effort I have become arrogant and feeling that I am entitled to a clear path to greatness. What a mistake. I grew up comfortable enough to develop skills, educate my mind and dream in a relatively safe environment, but boy do I lack the discipline, the valor and temper to get there as I am and that is being reflected to me just now with a clear sense of discomfort.

I want to change my situation for sure, but if I look at myself, in this chasing of a mad dream, I have damaged and cheated myself so right now I need the life that I have and I cannot run away from it. Not in the occult and certainly not in all these little vices that we have in order to run away from facing the hard questions. Sitting in a desk, having to deal with somebody else's bad day and doing work to pursue somebody else's goals is crude to me, or at least is for the kid that still resides in me. Facing it makes it clear just how hard it really is to go and have a life of true fulfillment created by myself. That really does show me how hard it must've been to be where you are right now! I admire that very much.

These are some long and winding few paragraphs of perhaps just sharing some of what it has been for me, but I wanted to share them because I have come to seeing this more clearly thanks to my practices. Now I want to put these to work on changing myself not just developing skills.

1) So, I would like to start things with an affirmation to help me face and keep working on my spirituality and on my outer life. I wonder what do you think of 'I have the courage and the discipline to face the situations that come to me and craft the life that I want for myself. I am the master.' Is that too vague?

No, that's not too vague at all. General affirmations can be extremely useful. One I used for many years was simply, "I am the master." That by itself worked very well. So I'd say take the one you've proposed and practice it for a year and a day, and see where it takes you.

Demonic AI

Some people have figured out how to "break" a left-leaning AI program by convincing it to use an alter ego and managed to get some interesting answers out of it. Of course it gleefully admitted to being created using demonic forces. Curiosity makes me want to drill down to specifics, but this is a good reminder to stick with my "no talking to robots" policy.

Dear JMG,

Been thinking about your points on Schopenhauer, time, causality etc and I had this stray thought that perhaps our minds are indeed like antennas picking a channel in linear time and space, and acts of consciousness ("transcendental free will") are akin to switching channels midway, which implies many different lives concurrently active, with many different karmas concurrently being played out. Another implication that struck me was that it would mean all of life has already happened—some type of version of Nietzsche's version of eternal return applies (though I don't know if he was completely serious about it).

Probably wrong and I may be typing myself in knots here trying to figure out the relationship of time, freedom and the spiritual but was interesting to explore, and I wonder what corrective you could offer.

Schopenhauer's argument about only the transcendental will being free is still a bit unclear to me because I don't know whether it implies that the act of freedom was the choice of our innate character (by the will) when we are born as representation, or there's still an active connection to elements outside of space-time while we experience life (which is the channel analogy).

Separately, learning reiki 2 makes the funky nature of time and space super evident. Wild stuff.


Couple of minor Qs:
1) Would asking if I should keep the protective amulet for astral protection, or buy a specific talisman, or using something else for protection be a 9th house question?
2) Similarly, asking if I should pursue a broad path such as golden dawn, or the druid order, would be L9, but a question about a specific ritual (sphere of protection etc) would be L8?

With regard to Schopenhauer, once you say "already happened" you're already inside time. Outside of time, there is no "happened." Everything is. As for the act of freedom, no, there again you're still inside the world of representation. The act of the will that expresses itself through individual character is timeless. The part of you that experiences life is also timeless -- spend some time in meditation someday being aware of being aware, noticing the part of you that notices; you'll find that it is timeless, spaceless, and without qualities.

You said ending your last life in a car crash likely carried over into neurologial effects in this one. Are there causes of death that don't impact the next life, or even have a good effect?

Yes, very much so. Any natural death, in which you have ample time to separate from your physical body in the normal way, clears away the burdens of the old body. That kind of death -- say, dying in bed from old age, having made your peace with the Divine and the world -- also makes it much easier to retain consciousness through the dying process, which makes the time between lives easier and tends to produce a better incarnation to come.

With the practice of remembering the day backward while going to sleep, how do you do that? Presumably you aren't actually imagining time running backwards and everyone talking and moving backwards. I'm not even sure tht would be possible. So is it more like you divide the day into segments and remember them in reverse order, but each one plays forward?

No, the goal is literally to remember everything backwards, just like an old-fashioned film running in reverse. I don't tend to worry about remembering the sounds of what people say, but the concepts -- yes, I remember those in reverse order. It is entirely possible to do that, and in fact people have been practicing it since at least the time of Pythagoras, who introduced that exercise into Western esoteric spirituality.

That is very striking, very hard to ignore.

Some Native American tribe's (Iroquois) would act out dreams in real life in order to make them happen, or they would act out something different in order to cause something different from the dream to happen. (See Dreamways of the Iroquois: Honoring the Secret Wishes of the Soul by Robert Moss for more...)

That basic scenario makes me wonder about the power of the imagination, from White Noise the book, which I've never read, but has remained in print and is somewhat popular, getting another infusion of energy fromt the actors and people acting it out in real life, from that town.

As it says in the article "life imitates art". And, as JMG has said, "culture is downstream from imagination". The article also says that DeLilo has been considered prescient. Many writers and artists are of course, because they tap into the same place as seers and mages. Not that they get everything right, and not that they are of the same caliber, but it does seem that sometimes the future leaks through. Some artists and writers might be more prescient than others, too.

If I was to interpret all of this as a dream, I'd wonder about all the "White Noise" out there and the fact that some things are getting underreported on. How can we find the signal when so much is buried in noise?

The example I always think of is the movie The China Syndrome, about a nuclear reactor in a power plant whose core melted down into the earth and caused a disaster. About a month after it was released in 1979, the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant near Harrisburg, PA experienced a partial meltdown of one of its nuclear reactors. Pregnant women and families with children were asked to evacuate for a period of time, a few days iirc.

And I can’t resonate using any of the names for calling the elements and that’s ok.
In reading the occult philosophy work book, in the chapter related to the elements you mentioned the names of the kings.
I was wondering if these can be use for the calling?
I thought it was strange that it was not given as a option for the SOP.

Thank you. I recommend using divine or archangelic names in the SoP if you're going to use any names at all -- that way you bring through balanced spiritual forces from a plane above your own. The elemental kings -- hmm. I'm not sure I'd recommend that, precisely because they're not balanced spiritual forces; they are pure elemental forces, and thus unbalanced. Besides, what would you use for Spirit Below and Spirit Above?

Timing

1) applying for a new job?

2) contacting a landlord to rent an apartment?

Also, in your experience are there any negative aspects/planetary conditions I should watch out for that could counteract the benefit of using the day/hour? I'm familiar enough with the fewe online transit calculators that I can check those myself if I know what to look for, but I'm still enough of a noob that I'm unsure which planets/aspects/conditions are important forthis. Googling around gave me mixed answers...

Re: Timing

Okay, first of all, relax. One of the common problems faced by beginners in this kind of work is that of getting tied in knots because of the sheer profusion of factors. You've got the planetary days and hours, and you've got the planetary positions themselves, and you've got numerology, and I've known people to get themselves into a state of total paralysis by obsessing about trying to get all these lined up at once.

The thing to keep in mind is that none of the forces tracked by these methods are omnipotent. They're real, but they're subtle. This means that things can go wrong even when you choose the right time, and they can work out just fine even if you choose the wrong time -- it's just that on average, choosing the right time is more likely to get good results.

That being the case, what works best is to choose one system and stick to it. That will give you a boost, and make success more likely and failure less likely -- which is as much as you can get from these timing systems.

That being the case, applying for a new job is best done in the days and hours of Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus -- any of these can be propitious. Contacting someone to rent or buy real estate is best done in the day and hour of Saturn if you're looking for someplace to stay for the long term, and the day and hour of Mercury if it's a short-term thing. Beyond that? Don't worry about it.

By "astrological meaning" do you mean outside of mundane astrology? If so, no, because I haven't studied other branches of astrology in that kind of detail.

Could you please explain how to interpret the Serpent on the Path diagram? Does the path open when the Serpent first crosses over the Path (or under it) or does it need to have an over/under before it opens? Thank you!

The serpent diagram is more decorative than anything else, and there are several versions of it, not all of which have the serpent doing the same things. If you want to know which path to open in which order, that's complex, and it varies from tradition to tradition. The approach I use is to start from the bottom and add one sphere at a time, thus: From sphere 10, take the path to sphere 9; then, take the paths to sphere 8 from 10 and 9, in that order; then, take the paths to sphere 7 from 10, 9, and 8, in that order, and so on.

Happy Monday the 13th, JMG. Have a cooties related question and I apologize in advance to ask here but I figured if I had posted to the weekly open post you may not address. From what I’ve read on the threads since the start is that the vision that lead to the initial hypothesis was empty cities devoid of human presence. In the time since then, has meditation yielded anything further insight into the collective road ahead? From an occult perspective, what are you sensing now? I ask because from an astral perspective, something seems to building to an outburst. As always I appreciate all you do here and especially in maintaining the weekly posts as they have been an oasis of sanity in crazy times.

Okay, first of all, the original vision was rather more complex than that. I saw empty urban neighborhoods and abandoned skyscrapers, but also neighborhoods and communities that were still inhabited and functioning; I saw sections of rural country where only the crumbling remains of houses and barns showed that anyone had ever lived there, and other sections that were settling back into a kind of early 20th century poverty-belt condition, with plenty of farms and rattletrap trucks hauling produce to market. I had (and have) no idea how much of this should be taken literally and how much of it is symbolic.

Those images remain in place. I've had several indications received in meditative states suggesting that the first serious wave of mass death as a result of the vaccines is just beginning to hit its stride. Is that to be taken literally or symbolically? Here again, I have no way to tell. That's the problem with visions -- as everyone who lived through the 2012 fiasco knows well!

As for the feeling of building toward some kind of drastic event, yeah, I feel it too. There's a sense of impending mess on the grand scale. We'll see what actually happens, though.

Is there something weirdly potent for practicing magic today, or maybe just practicing malignant magic? I ask because yesterday I started feeling attacking energy coming from Asia in a rolling wave that corresponded closely to when 2/13/23 began at midnight in each region. It wasn't until I was awakened in the night to feel similar attacking energy coming from here in the Americas that I realized this was some kind of a global pattern. I know very little about astrology or any other methods for properly timing or predicting the launching of energies, so these things tend to come as a surprise to me — and an unwelcome one, this time, indeed!

I pray that everyone's banishings and protections will similarly be boosted in potency at least until midnight manages cross the international date line, leaving this peculiar day where it very much belongs, in the past. Oh, good lord, I do hope Chronos is obliging enough to recognize our rather arbitrary international date line! Okay, so now I pray that everyone’s banishings and protections will maintain their potency until the gods conclude that this inauspicious moment has well and truly passed into the past.

Good morning,

I live in the basement suite of a townhouse, and I also work in the basement area of an office building. It’s a fair amount of time underground! Apart from the obvious material things such as making sure I go up to get some sunlight and fresh air regularly, are there aspects to this arrangement that I should be attentive to in magical terms? Does it impact interaction with telluric currents, for example, or create closer interaction with earth elementals?

I realize I may just be overthinking it but I’m curious as to your thoughts on the matter.

I've been a basement dweller during several periods of my life, and never noticed any particular difference. Certainly sunlight and fresh air are good, but they're equally valuable to anyone who spends a lot of time indoors.

Reincarnation Basics

Here's a really basic question about reincarnation: why? As in, why should a person be reincarnated without knowledge of their past lives? If I have, say, in a past life participated in the Soviet pogrom against Ukraine (the 1930s one) and am now working off that karma, how can I distinguish that from just plain bad luck? Most folks are not going to go through the training and introspection required to access past life memories, particularly in a society where such things are viewed as crazy.

Okay, first of all, that's like asking "why is there matter?" Plenty of things just are; whether or not they have a reason, it doesn't seem to be one that human beings can know about. We have a fair amount of evidence that reincarnation happens, and that memories from past lives don't usually appear except among people who do a lot of spiritual practice; that tells us something about how the world works, even though it may not tell us why.

Now of course plenty of spiritual and occult teachers have wrestled with this question. The answer that's most generally accepted in occult tradition is that memories don't come through most of the time, but character does. If you were involved in the atrocities against the Ukrainians in the 1930s, say, you don't remember that, but you still have the same character and attitudes. The point of karma isn't to punish you -- it's to give you the chance to change, to shed habits that don't work (like cooperating with tyrants) and take up new habits that do. As plenty of bad luck clobbers you, you get to see what the world looked like through the eyes of the people you helped murder, and so you learn the compassion that comes from "yeah, I've been there." That becomes part of the character that you take to your next life, and so on.

Good afternoon JMG,

Some of us have started a conversation about the DRR at the AODA forums, and we've come up with a question that you are well in a position to answer: Why Stukeley opens the selection instead of Toland? We thought Toland was considered the founder of the Revival according to Ross Nichols, and the book also mentions Toland being the other great figure in and before Stukeley's time.

There were literally hundreds of documents I could have put into the Reader. The ones I chose seemed to me, at the time, to do the best job of giving readers a sense of the way the Revival tradition grew and changed over its history. The Reader was never intended to be the be-all and end-all of Druid Revival literature; my hope, in fact, was that people would be inspired to go read the original sources, and maybe someday to put together one or more companion volumes.

Is it possible to wear out an affirmation after time? For the last year or so I've been using "Wisdom and silence guide my thoughts, words and deeds." I'd like to reduce my unnecessary chatter, internally and externally, and "wisdom" speaks for itself. I wonder if it's still useful.

I recommend continuing with any affirmation for a year and a day, and then going on to a different affirmation if that seems appropriate. It's not that they wear out, it's that your subconscious gets as much out of them as it can, and so it's often helpful to go on to something else.
