May I interject a few resources here? Preserving the slide rule as a working technology is a minor crusade of mine. Here are some good books on the subject you can download for free:
The first is by none other than Isaac Asimov, who (like every working scientist of his generation) was adept with a "slipstick."
One very good book that isn't available for free download, as far as I know, is Clyde Clason's Delights of the Slide Rule. It's fairly hard to find these days, though I have a copy; if you spot one, snap it up.
