Besides what's coming down the planes, another factor could be the rising tensions in society. I would expect it to cause more people to have an activated survival mechanism, so fight/flight or functional freeze responses would be more common. I can see that in for example more agression on the road, people refusing to discuss something or the robotic way some people perform their job.

And of course there is also the presence of a spiky, biotoxic, blood-brain barrier crossing substance in a significant part of the population.
