I read once that in parts of the middle east when you receive a gift or favor you're generally expected to reciprocate. Saying "Thanks" instead signals that you won't or can't return the favor, and can be seen as rude in some contexts. I haven't been able to find any other source corroborating its rudeness, though, so take it with a grain of salt.
