Magic Monday

the king in orangeMidnight is almost here, and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions noted below, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after that point will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 341,928th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.2 of The Magic Monday FAQ here

Also:
I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

The
image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week.  Given the events scheduled tomorrow, I've pulled this one forward out of order; it's my 65th published book, the one that got me banned from science fiction conventions (despite 18 SF and fantasy novels currently in print) and dropped like a hot rock by most of the Neopagans I know. No, it's not a work of science fiction, nor does it have much to say about Neopaganism. It's a discussion of why the policies embraced by a bipartisan consensus of the elite classes in the US made the rise of Donald Trump or somebody like him inevitable. Yes, it also talks about magic -- the magical manipulations that were used for fifty years to silence any attempt to talk publicly about what the policies just mentioned did to the working classes in the United States, the magic wielded by a motley band of (mostly) young men living in their mothers' basements who marched off to the Meme Wars beneath the banner of a cartoon frog, and the magic attempted by the so-called Magic Resistance, whose attempts to cast death curses and other equally pleasant spells at the people they hate did a lot to bring about the events of last November and the days immediately before us.

That is to say, it's just a little controversial. ;-)  On the off chance you're interested anyway, you can order a copy here if you live in the US and at your favorite online shop or full service bookstore if you live elsewhere.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

With that said, have at it!

Essene vs DMH SOP

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like the short Essene version of the SOP where a drop of light of unconditional love from God/Universe is at the origin of the sphere of white light. Can this be incorporated into the regular SOP from your Druid books?

You are very welcome! It works for pleasant memories too, and astrological transits to some degree, oddly enough. A teacher of mine told me he would pick a good transit on his chart and write the time of it on the top of his examinations, to good effect! Now he does the same when offering a class on top of the whiteboard.

odd presence in shrine

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My regular ritual practice involves the circle of presence, then invoking pentagrams at each quarter calling on a particular god, then an offering with a prayer and then the central ray exercise, then banishing pentagrams at each of the four quarters, then the circle of presence. When I do the offering I have a shrine that the statue of the god is in which I open to do the offering. Today as soon as I opened the shrine to do the offering I got an immediate impression of some kind of howling, raging thing instead of the normal positive god energy. My reaction was to close the shrine and do the banishing and back away slowly. Can you please offer me any advice on what's going on and/or what I should do?

stuff

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Was a little surprised when my divination suggested that parts of the military-intelligence and governing elite nexus are aware of the cyclical cataclysms as the ages change, and and are anticipating the next one this century, and thats why we are seeing more UFO disinformation stuff (population management operations), apart from just advanced weapons research.

Taking it with a pinch of salt, but strange stuff.

This video (https://t.co/ZFBmQRnchi) has a vedic astrologer who compares the various mythologies across cultures to guess the right dates (says Kali Yuga ends now in 2025 but there's one cataclysm ahead; a total cycle of 25,800 years mapped to the precession of the equinox / movement of the sun around the galatic centre/central sun).

Hi Jeff,

Did I read on your blog that you were a Christian at one point? You then started practicing Heathenism, is that correct?

How have you found the change? Do you have any guilt or fear after changing?

Many thanks for your input.

Greetings dear JMG,

I wanted to learn more about the spiritual process of hieros gamos, the union of male and female, and what its role and purpose is.

I also wanted to know how it overlaps or differs with the secret fire idea in western hermeticism and alchemy (which you have previous indicated is likely to be the same thing as the kundalini awakening of the Indian tradition.)

I was also curious how the archetypes interact with these spiritual processes.

OP here. I do see Trump more and more as the Changer in Orange, and not the Dictator in Orange. And hopefully, that bodes well for the future. As for some of his minions, I'm not so sure, but none have the symbolic sticking power.

Supernatural glimpses, and blessings

[personal profile] xcalibur_djs 2025-01-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I mentioned before that I get "flashes" of other people's lives in the contemporary world, like flicking into their head for a moment. To recap, it's stuff like riding a bike through a city in Southeast Asia, flying a kite on a beach, doing cosmetics in a mirror, and so on, just random human stuff from our time period. Flicking into female headspaces feels a bit strange, and it's somewhat less common, but I get those too. I'd like to add a couple more, which are more detailed than the rest:

A girl playing soccer, falling in an awkward way, ending up in a sort of split, and she felt her hymen get partially torn. It feels especially weird to see this, like it's none of my business, but ultimately it's not an unusual human experience.

The most detailed was a guy in the Middle East. He's definitely Arab or Persian, I could gather that much, and I saw inside his house, which had very middle eastern decor (also unlike any house I've ever been in). He was an introvert, much like myself, until he got radicalized into a fundamentalist branch of Islam. The last flash I got from him was addressing a crowd via microphone, railing at Israel and America.

Again, I don't know how I get these glimpses into the lives and memories of others, but I'm grateful for it. I can also distinguish this from my past life memories, which feel quite different; there's no mistaking the different categories. I'm also quite confident that it's real, since these thoughts/images come to me without any effort of the imagination, I only receive and interpret.

When I last brought this up, you suggested that I offer them blessings. Been meaning to do so, and you assured me that it's not too time-sensitive. But... I hope this isn't a dumb question, but how should I go about blessing others? Should I do whatever comes naturally (like my experiments in astral magic), should I do it in a Catholic way, or is there a druid/occult approach you'd recommend?

Other than that, any speculation on how/why I get these rather fascinating glimpses into the lives of my fellow humans?

Occult dimensions of BPD

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi JMG,

Interestingly, the discussions of the karmic implications of narcissism from last week coincide with my own ruminations on the prevalence of borderline personality disorder (BPD), particularly amongst modern women.

BPD is a complex and controversial concept, but to put it succinctly, it refers to a cluster of maladaptive behaviours stemming from early childhood trauma, most often abandonment by, or the death of, a caregiver.

Relationships with BPD sufferers are *very* intense, and can even seem fated or karmic in nature. I suspect my recent ex-girlfriend has untreated impulsive BPD, and the whole relationship was saturated with bizarre (and often very dark) synchronicities, archetypal patterns, and ancestral connections.

In my case, it seemed like something weird was going on, beyond just having the misfortune to get into a relationship with an extremely disturbed and traumatised woman.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the karmic implications of BPD, and if others have relevant experiences.

Thank you for the generous offer, Kylec! I would appreciate healing hands as I have been having trouble recovering from rather mysterious pains in my hips and lower spine lately and though I use healing hands on myself (along with other healing modalities), it looks like I could use some extra healing help!

Getting out of reincarnation

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume The Way of the Golden Section, for its focus on the mental plane, would be better to get out of reincarnation than The Celtic Golden Dawn with its astral focus. What am I missing here?

I can confirm getting out of the bad situation is the best cure.

Not surprisingly our society pushes the opposite. It’s even a theme in our entertainment that “running away never solves anything.” Also why almost the only prayer pushed by materialists is the “Serenity” prayer with special emphasis on “things I cannot change.”

Re: Glastonbury gathering topics

(Anonymous) 2025-01-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I am so glad you brought up dream mapping. This is a question I’ve wanted to ask here for a long time, because I am convinced as well that I’ve travelled in dreams to places that have some kind of objective reality beyond my unconscious. It’s also a different experience from astral projection, where the feeling of the soul leaving the body is somehow more concrete.
Unfortunately I won’t be able to go to Glastonbury, but if anybody has sources, or if the Gathering produces any documentation on this subject, I’d be very interested.
Thank you!

I'll share my recent experience, not as advice, but as a caution. I'd get professional tax advice. I didn't and wish I had. Same goes for investment advice but here I'd be more skeptical as it's difficult to find someone who puts your interest above theirs. If I had to do it again I would put it in a trust first.
Apologies for the unsolicited opinion. Wish I had gotten some at the time though.

Hello Mr. Greer, after reading the chart you delineated for the 2025 Presidential inauguration, an unlikely idea came to my mind that a Constitutional Convention may successfully occur during Trump’s second term leading to the replacement of the current Constitution with a new version. The peculiar thing about the scenario that came to my mind is that the new Constitution will have the President appointed by the Supreme Court with senatorial approval, while the Supreme Court justices be elected by the Electoral College. The thought will not leave my head, so my question is if such a scenario were to occur, would it change any aspects of the inauguration chart? I will appreciate your input, thank you.

Interestingly, though I’m a Christian, I didn’t know the word ruach until recently, when a 7-year-old (my daughter’s friend) came up to me during a playdate and announced, out of the blue, “Did you know there’s a word for the breath of God? When he breathed into us and made us? That’s everywhere? It’s ruach! Ruach! RUACH!” She was ecstatic, shouting the word with total joy on a Providence playground.

Her parents, though very lax Catholics, had put her in catechism classes to make first communion, and she had just learned it there. I found it so interesting how much this lesson, and this word, affected her. She’s not particularly chatty toward me usually either—I can’t think of another time she ever struck up conversation with me during a playdate.

“Ruach!”

“If that isn't done, there's more of a chance that the soul may refuse to process its memories and flee from them, and in that case, yes, it tends to reincarnate very quickly in a complete muddle.”

This made me curious, do you know if souls that do that are more likely to have past life memories unexpectedly surface in their next life or is it more dependent on their level of development?

Dear JMG, I was wondering if you could point me to any books that talk about the Druid Gods in the sop and mentioned in your books such as Ced, Celi, Hu, etc. I have been wanting to learn more about them, such as what each ones specific realm is meaning which would one pray to and work with for certain things or what appeals to each on an altar, etc. If there are no such available thank you for listening any way!

To piggyback on what JMG and open_space said: there's an even perhaps more familiar term...spirit, from "spirare," to breathe. As in, spiritus, or Spiritus Sanctus.

For with every spoken word, there is the Speaker, and the Word (Logos/Verbum), and the Breath (Pneuma/Spiritus). Thus, they are one.

D&D Magician Classes

(Anonymous) 2025-01-21 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if this is appropriate for Magic Monday, so I understand if it doesn't go through, but I wanted to take the opportunity to ask someone with a breadth and depth of knowledge.

I'm looking to design a class for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition that could fit a certain magical niche. I know you've mentioned playing an older edition that doesn't look like the current model of the game, so I wanted to explain really quick the current magical classes:

• Bards utilize Charisma to craft magic with music.
• Clerics utilize Wisdom to draw upon magic from their deities.
• Druids utilize Wisdom to draw upon the powers of nature.
• Sorcerers utilize Charisma to command the magic inherent in their bloodline.
• Warlocks utilize Charisma to draw upon the power made through pacts with powerful beings (Archfey, Celestials, etc.)
• Wizards utilize Intelligence to call upon magic they have studied and researched.

Tangentially, Monks are a (generally) non-magical class that has a feature called Unarmored Defense - their Wisdom makes them harder to hit in combat. Barbarians do the same thing with Constitution.

I'm looking to make a magical class that does the same thing with Charisma. Something about their willpower or persuasiveness makes them harder to hit if they're not wearing physical armor. I initially considered "Shaman," as someone who can go into a trance and allow another being to share their body, but I'm wondering if there is a better, real-world word for a kind of magician that would evoke something like that as an archetype?
