It wasn't quite like that. I had been getting increasingly bored by television in my early teen years, but there were two shows I still liked watching and followed regularly, Kung Fu and Kolchak: The Night Stalker. (Yes, my interests were already pretty well established by then.) Both were cancelled at the end of the 1974-1975 TV season, and I shrugged and just stopped watching TV, since nothing else on the tube appealed to me at all. The TV was still on in the living room fairly often but my bedroom and a family room nobody else used were downstairs, and that's where I usually was. Then I went away to college and never got a TV, and it just went from there.
I began my magical studies in a not very systematic way the winter of 1976-1977, and didn't get really serious about it until the summer of 1984, so I stopped watching TV before then.
