Yes! That's the way the zeitgeist taught me to handle emotions growing up in the '80s and '90s. It was also widely considered admirable to say, "I sometimes feel X, I understand anyone who does, and it's wrong to act on that feeling because [reasoning]." Then around 2005 I started noticing these young newly minted adults who thought the feelings themselves were bad / having ever felt them at all made you a Bad Person...it stood out to me as a big change.
These days Ms. Rachel (youtuber popular among the 1-4 year old set) has Miss Hannah LCSW teaching kids "your mad is like a balloon, you can blow it up or you can shrink it with dismissive happy thoughts, make sure you shrink it"...
My child is into "Dr John" (also on youtube, aimed at age 4-7). He has a song called "I will be OK" which goes, "When someone's mean, I feel angry or feel sad / I can lose my cool and make myself look bad / Or I can take a breath. I don't have to stay mad!"
My child loves this song and wants to watch it again and again. So I tell her, "Sometimes you should stay mad, though, and use your mad to give you energy to act. That's something you have to decide for yourself, if it's bad enough to fight back."
It did stand out to me how he says "I can lose my cool *and make myself look bad*"...
