It depends very much on whether you participate in the behavior that is the focus of the curse. If you state the necessary consequences of something, and then make sure not to take part in whatever it is, you benefit from the escape clause: if x --> y, then not(x) --> not(y). If you state the curse and then do the same thing as the people who earned it, then it drags you down too. Take your pick!
