Digging a fence into the ground is a lot of work. I've had some luck with just folding the fence mesh so the bottom of the fence is a corner. The folded fencing covers the ground away from the fence. If an animal tries to dig "at the fence", they just hit the fence under their feet. I don't think they're smart enough to back up a foot and start digging there.
