I've used Audacity on machines as far back as a 2012 pre-Retina Macbook Pro. If there is a bottleneck, it would likely be the hard disk. The fix would be to get a small Solid State Drive just for audio files, or with more geek setup time, replacing the hard drive entirely with an SSD. I recommend turning off wifi and not running other software while editing audio.
