Scrying in the spirit vision is millenia older than the Golden Dawn, though the specific techniques are not quite the same everywhere and everywhen. A good brief, quite readable, history in English is Theodore Bestermann's Crystal-Gazing (1924). Armand Delatte's La Catoptromancie Grecque et ses Dérivés (Liége & Paris, 1932), also available here and there on the web, is more or less limited to the Ancient World. Delatte was one of the very best 20th-century historians of magic in Antiquity. Most of his books can be downloaded on the web without incurring any copyright violations -- France has different rules about copyright than the USA.
