It's just before midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. (I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. The image? I field a lot of questions about my books on magic these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week. The book on the left is the current edition of my fifth published book, The Encyclopedia of Natural Magic. I got tired of the torrent of wildly inaccurate books on herb and stone magic, and decided to write one based entirely on medieval and Renaissance sources -- granted, it helped that I'd gotten fairly good at reading Latin by the time I got to work on it. I wrote this before I studied hoodoo with Cat Yronwode, or it would have had much more traditional American conjure in it. It's still a solid book, and one I use myself whenever I need to look up the magical properties of an herb or what have you -- and it's the oldest of my books that's still with its original publisher, for whatever that's worth. Dear JMG,

For my whole life I have gotten a respiratory virus 2-3 times a year. In the last week of August 2022 I got Covid. I started practicing the Sphere of Protection in the current version I practice, every morning, in September 2022. Since then I have seen mighty and immediate improvements in my life, however one thing that took longer for me to notice is that I have not gotten sick with anything that has been going around despite heavy exposure throughout the past year+. I have been trying to isolate what might have caused this shift in my health and have it down to two things that have changed in my life since September 2022. The Sphere or Protection is one of them, so I am asking you if such a side effect is normal. If not I will know it is the other.

fwiw, I have seen the same thing in myself and others. If you don't mind some observations:

More and more, as I explore esoteric healing methods I am subscribing to the theory that infection (not all of them of course) is a deficit of the life-force that allows an area to start decaying and then other organisms that are in charge of decay go in, or make it vulnerable enough for viruses. Just like when you cut a fruit out of its source (the tree) and it starts going bad or when a river path gets stagnant and becomes a cultivation ground for bacteria or when cartilage stops getting blood flow and it erodes. Much to my surprise, I found out esoteric and energetic systems of healing agree with that observation. "Fields" don't seem to emanate from matter as physics puts it extending the electromagnetic theory in all cases, but rather it seems that some fields concentrate a different kind of substance and makes matter happen, which in turn keeps our organs and bodies healthy.

I know quite a few people who've found that regular performance of a protective magical working makes them more resistant to illness -- and the SoP seems to do more of that than some other rituals. (It was when I took up the SoP as my daily ritual that I stopped having trouble with bronchitis, for example -- that used to be a yearly ordeal, and I haven't had a single case now in more than fifteen years.) So it may be that in your case as well.
