Governments are also part of the cosmos, and subject to the powers that shape the cosmos. If a government decides to fund some occult project, who's to say that powers on the inner planes didn't manipulate the paranoid minds of the government officials in question, moving them around in accordance with some higher purpose? Whether someone comes across as an insincere actor is as irrelevant to my point of view as any other detail of their personality; the question in my mind is whether their teachings work in practice -- though I do tend to keep an eye on what happened to them personally, since that's one guide to how well their system works in the long run.
