Don't feel foolish -- this is very, very common, and for good reason. Of all the planets, Venus is the one most people can perceive as a being, not just a light, and so it routinely gets identified as a UFO, or something of the kind. In ancient times people were more sensible and simply identified it as a goddess or spirit!
