Magic Monday

Dion FortuneIt's almost midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. (I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The picture?  I'm working my way through photos of my lineage, focusing on the teachers whose work has influenced me and the teachers who influenced them in turn.
Quite a while ago we reached Israel Regardie, and then chased his lineage back through Aleister Crowley et al. After he left Crowley, however, Regardie also spent a while studying with this week's honoree, the redoubtable Violet Firth Evans, better known to generations of occultists as Dion Fortune. Born in Wales and raised in a Christian Science family, Fortune got into occultism after a stint as a Freudian lay therapist -- that was an option in her time.  She was active in the Theosophical Society, belonged to two different branches of the Golden Dawn, studied with a number of teachers, and then founded her own magical order, the Fraternity (now Society) of the Inner Light. She also wrote some first-rate magical novels and no shortage of books and essays on occultism, including The Cosmic Doctrine, the twentieth century's most important work of occult philosophy. I'm pleased to be only four degrees of separation from her.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

And don't forget to look up your Pangalactic New Age Soul Signature at CosmicOom.com.

With that said, have at it!

Final(?) "Hail Idun" and Question About Etheric Action at a Distance

[personal profile] jprussell 2023-04-03 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Good Evening,

I hope everyone's spring is picking up well, and to those who observe it, may Good Friday call to mind the burdens of this life and Easter give the promise of their lifting.

To Share: Okay, for those following along, I think I've settled on a shape for the "Hail Idun": https://jpowellrussell.com/#last_hail_idun . A big thanks to everyone who shared your thoughts and feedback on earlier takes - even if you don't see the words you shared, know that your thoughts and suggestions were threads for meditation and helped shape what came out here. As always, any thoughts or feedback are welcome (you can comment on my dreamwidth over here, if you want to spare JMG some work: https://jprussell.dreamwidth.org/5565.html).

To Ask: For things like the MOE spiritual healing, I'm trying to build up a mental model of how this works at a distance. My understanding is that any kind of non-material healing of physical conditions will be mediated through etheric energy. My understanding is also that etheric energy is fairly tied to local, material bodies, so you can't directly send etheric energy, say, around the globe just by willing it so. That being said, a lot of the MOE material, like the attunements, seem to operate at a distance beyond the usual range of etheric phenomena. Here's my guess of what is happening: in trying to heal someone far away, the Essene healer follows the ritual and imagines the person far away, thus working on the astral level. Astral phenomena is not bound by location, and so can influence even things far away. This astral influence then comes down a plane into the etheric near the person to be healed and "excites" or "creates patterns within" the etheric energy in/around the person to be healed.

Is this a more or less accurate model? I know it's not strictly necessary for doing the work, I'm mostly just curious and trying to understand.

As always, thanks very much to JMG and everyone else here for building a setting for stirring, worthwhile sharing of thoughts.

To any who will have them, I put forth my blessings and best wishes,
Jeff

Thank you! Clearly I need to get to the re-read of the theory portions of the lessons I've been meaning to do.

On that note, I've been having a very rough weekend health-wise, could you send some of that healing energy my way please?

Not JMG, but for what it's worth, good energy en route!

Hm. Have you ever tried to (or know about somebody who did) send healing energy back in time, i.e. to yourself or somebody else at an earlier point of time? If so, would you mind sharing the results?

Hi JP,

How do you make the time to study all this stuff? Any suggestions for the rest of us?

Thanks for the Easter 🐣 wishes. Please apply this backatcha to the holiday of your choice. (I have to find the “Lawyer’s Holiday Wish “ and put up a link, it applies to all of us here, and it’s darn funny.)

Of course, and thank you! Our older daughter will be celebrating the blessed sacrament of bunny-delivered candy, and in a few weeks, I'll be marking Beltienne/Eostre, so thanks very much!

For the lawyer's holiday wishes, is this it? https://www.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/merrry-christmas-from-your-lawyer-15-5e0614f103e87__700.jpg

And getting to your first question last, never as much as I'd like? I've tried to follow our host's advice to watch less TV, which helps somewhat, and I have a pretty flexible job, so that helps too.

Cheers!
Jeff

That one’s funny but not the original—the original one is all text and goes on for quite a while in a suitably lawyerly fashion. Next time it goes round the Internet I’ll post it.

When the Internet’s gone, or priced out of our reach, what’ll we do for funny pictures? Will we have to return to the era of Team Faxing, where complicated arrangements were made so that one person sent the (perhaps risquĂ©, or even downright unDruidly) picture, at a time when the recipient could be hovering near the fax machine without arousing the boss’s suspicions? God forbid. It could get quite intricate if you had a nosy boss who never got sick and never took a day off (the Boss From Funny Fax Hell, even if she was otherwise quite nice).

FWIW, I like this last iteration quite a lot; it's a big improvement on the three options you had earlier. Have you put it into practice yet?

Thank you! So far, I've said it a few times, but not yet as the main prayer in a rosary-style prayer (I need at least one more prayer for that, the "Allfather", and also to finish making the prayer bead loop). Even the little I've done, it feels like its working pretty well.
