It's nothing about what a book says but the astrological definition of malefic as exerting a harmful influence. One would think that taking irredeemable souls outside the solar system would be a net positive and not malefic.

I believe, historically comets were viewed as omens and coincided with disasters, etc. Maybe that's the price to be paid for cleaning out irredeemable soul.
