1) As noted in the instructional paper, any mortar will do, provided that you wash it several times with distilled water and then let it dry thoroughly.
2) I don't know. All the instructions I've ever seen in old pharmacy books assume that either you're using a mixture of water and pure grain alcohol, or you're triturating it with some kind of sugar (usually lactose). You'd have to try it and see.
