Yes, I'm familiar with the concept. It doesn't have to be vampiric in nature -- quite the contrary, it's one of the routes that Taoists have used for a very long time to step out of the cycle of rebirth. It's not a path I recommend, however. (If this suggests to you that there are many options for the evolving soul, good -- that's what it should suggest.)
