Magic Monday

unknownIt's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The image (or lack of same)? At this point I've traced Juliet Ashley's lineage back as far as photos and documentation extend. John Gilbert's other main teacher, Rev. Matthew William Shaw aka Rhodonn Starrus, is a tougher proposition. Born in Pennsylvania, he became a Universalist minister, serving in a church in the Allentown, PA area.  In 1952 he and two other ministers of the Universalist Church, Revs. Omar Zasluchy and Owen Symanski, left the church to protest the upcoming merger between their denomination and the Unitarian Church. (They believed that the Unitarians planned on taking over the congregations,  churches, and bank accounts, and then discarding every element of Universalist teaching and tradition; as it turned out, they were right.) In 1952, the three of them were duly consecrated as bishops by Bishop Robert Monroe of the Liberal Catholic Church, and founded the Universal Gnostic Church (UGC). Rev. Shaw had already founded the Modern Order of Essenes as a healing order associated with his church, and took it with him into the UGC. In 1972 he relocated to the Boulder, CO area where he became a friend and associate of Dr. Juliet Ashley, and received initiation into the orders she headed -- the Order of Spiritual Alchemy, the Holy Order of the Golden Dawn, and the Ancient Order of Druids in America -- while she became active in the Modern Order of Essenes and the Universal Gnostic Church.  John Gilbert described him as a gifted teacher but a strict taskmaster, who demanded the best from his students and usually got it.

I have yet to find a photo of the man, or accurate information on his birth and death dates -- I gather from what John told me that he died sometime in the 1980s. I have also been unable to find much of anything about Bishop Robert Monroe of the LCC -- there were plenty of schisms in the LCC's history, and he apparently ended up on the wrong side of one of them, so he's just a name in a few old lists at this point. I hope to be able to get more information on him, on Matthew Shaw, and on the early history of the UGC as things proceed.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use the link above to access my online tip jar:  PayPal for now, but that'll be replaced by a couple of other options shortly. If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I now have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

With that said, have at it!

Re: Modernity and enchantment

An addendum. I suppose I'm asking something like this: I'd like to figure out how to turn modernity down from an 11, instead of attempting to turn enchantment up to a 15, to overcompensate. An enchantment setting at, oh, 7 or 8 sounds good, while modernity is set to 3, maybe 4. The dang dial for modernity seems to be busted off and set at 11 though. It just doesn't want to quiet down...

Those interested in the reincarnation and gender dysphoria issue might like episode 31 of this podcast:

Anyone interested in reincarnation in general might like the podcast more broadly.

A really cool article

Not a question, just a share (so if this doesn't get posted, I can save it for the next Open Post). :-)

This article (https://www.laetusinpraesens.org/docs10s/blackhux.php) discusses polyhedra and relates them to King Arthur's Round Table, I Ching, angels and the 72 names of God, binary decision-making... so many things that might appeal to you and the commentariat.

I found the article researching Paul Schatz, who developed a 2D net of Zodiac signs that can fold into a 3D dodecahedron. (If you want to read how that relates to Fortune's description of precessing rays creating Chokmah and Herakle's Labors, my take on that is here https://randomactsofkarmasc.dreamwidth.org/1145.html.)

Hi again, JMG!

I’ve changed my mind and now I do have a question I’d like to ask. What, if any, occult sources do you think might be behind the rise of such odd ailments as Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, “long Covid”, etc?

I was diagnosed with Fibro over a decade ago and based on my experience I feel that despite the pain and exhaustion feeling very real it is very much a mental health and lifestyle thing. I’m basically in the “it’s psychological” camp. Cleaning up my lifestyle habits and my mental health has more or less resolved all my symptoms… until I get too stressed out again…

So in addition to life style and mental health reasons, I wonder what kind of occult reasons there might be behind these types of ailments and how common they’ve become? Something on the astral or etheric realm? Some energetic imbalance?

Eolh or Calc Rune?

[personal profile] brenainn 2022-11-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I did a divination earlier today and, I'm rather embarrassed to admit, I'm not sure which rune I drew. I'm using the Anglo-Saxon futhorc, and I drew either eolh or calc. Since calc is eolh inverted, I'm not sure how to tell the difference. The rune set that I acquired didn't come with a guide, but the rune that I drew has a small dot next to the rune symbol. If you or the commentariat can help me out here, a rather important divination question can be answered. Thanks!

I recall reading somewhere that Julius Ceasar was convinced that he was the reincarnation of Achilles; Napolean believed he had been Julius Ceasar and Hitler gazed long and thoughtfully at Napoleon's tomb, though I don't recall whether he ever said or wrote that he was Napoleon reborn.

I remember meeting a member of the Bay Area occult community who claimed to have been burned as a witch 600 years earlier. I personally thought it was time she got over it.

And 70 is low count for new Crowley's. Someone once made a mock announcement of a meeting for reincarnations of Crowley--to be held in Kezar Stadium (football field).

Wow. So, Saturn has the trickster birds?

Hekate's creatures are snakes and black dogs, for what that's worth.

Thank you as always for this space. I am having a difficult time with persistent health problems and which make me feel like I am, or I am at risk of, going backwards after a period where I was really flourishing.

I feel like I need to ask for guidance on here - I had an epiphany that I should - but I don't yet have the energy to write out the dilemma that most bothered me at that moment.

I do not do divination because it can provoke anxiety, and whilst I sometimes turn to pathworking, repeated bouts of illness involving fever and mental exhaustion mean that I have not been in the right headspace for it for some weeks. The last time I approached it I could see that I would have filled it with too-dark things and I was advised to follow my instinct to wait.

I mostly follow the Greek pantheon, as well as Odin and a few other deities though I do sometimes feel I am looking for another deity I haven't found yet. I have been doing the SOP since you first posted it on this blog, though in recent weeks I have usually had to do it sitting down or from bed.

Do you have any advice at the moment?

Thank you again.

Re: Sexual Transmutation

(Anonymous) 2022-11-22 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
One way is total or near total celibacy. If you're following a spiritual path that energy can be used towards those goals and transmuted via most spiritual disciplines. This is not for everybody though. There is a 6th Rite (after the 5 are mastered) which transmutes sexual energy. Of interest might be Richard Rose's "Energy Transmutation, Transmission and Betweenness."

Also, just not worrying about it and having a normal sexual relationship is totally fine and many occultists and spiritual practitioners do that too. Of interest might also be Dion Fortune's "The Problem of Purity." If you're doing banishing rituals and such, you're probably not going to have a problem with negative entities.

(Not the asker.) I believe this question came out of you describing "serious operative mage" as a "more than full time job". While of course using the magic for causing change outside oneself would take further time, what you described - as you implied - is well within possibility for someone with a 9-to-5 job. That made it sound to me as if the incompatibility between serious operative magic and temporal power is much more the latter being a more-than-full-time job than the former. What, if anything, am I missing?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
OP here.
Thank you, JMG, Robert and Anon for the responses.

I'll start looking for exits. It will be difficult because I have horrible self-esteem and can't imagine anyone else wanting to pay me to do anything... but that's the wearing down process, perhaps.

Like Robert says, the egregore changes over time. And this one has certainly gotten worse the last, oh, 5 years. I didn't notice right away; boiling frogs and all that. (That and no self-esteem are why I'm still here, Anon.)

What's strange is that not only is the spirit of the organization much stronger than any individual, as you say, JMG, but it also seems much more extreme than any individual. Almost every other person working there is willing to treat me more-or-less humanely, but when I stop looking at the individuals and contemplate the spirit of the place? It's not nearly as tolerant. Maybe that's just because the individuals see my masks and think I'm (almost) one of them, and an egregore is operating on a more honest level I can't hide from.

I was under the impression that the personality in this life is a transient thing that's cast off at death, allowing us to be different in the next life. But you're saying that the next personality will be similar?

Also, does this mean that a bland little person in this life will go on being bland?

"find a job that will support your soul as well as meeting your material needs."

Do you have any ideas how to go about that?

Re: The body of light

(Anonymous) 2022-11-22 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Mr Greer,

Does the Way of the Golden Section have a method of working with the body of light?
And would you recommend doing work with the Celtic Golden Dawn after finishing WotGS?

Thanks

(Anonymous) 2022-11-22 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
If someone wanted to do this, using natal astrology, what sources would you recommend for looking into the topic? Most of the material I've seen does not include a discussion of how it's done.

I did not think of it in those terms, being all ai generated. In my mind it was like looking at something in the realm of Bosch. My sincere and heartfelt apology. I will be more conscientious going forward. Won’t happen again.
