"They are professionals in what they do."

Quite true.

I was actually thinking about how the whole "experts got everything wrong" position is really not true - or rather, it's true only from a certain perspective.

If you think that the job of public health bureaucrats is public heath, or that the job of professional mainstream journalists is journalism, or that the job of doctors and other medical workers is to keep people healthy, or that the job of elected officials to govern in the interests of the people - well, then obviously the vast majority of experts failed at their jobs.

But what does "their jobs" really mean? If you look at if from the perspective that the real job of the bureaucrats is to serve the politicians that appoint them, the real job of the politicians is to serve the donors and lobbyists who get them elected, the real job of the journalists is to disseminate propaganda on behalf of the establishment, and the real job of medical workers is to uphold the medical-industrial complex - well, then it all makes sense. Almost all of our highly-qualified, well-credentialed experts did their jobs, and did them well. They are professionals, and they delivered the services for which the system selected them and for which they were hired and promoted. We just don't happen to like what they delivered - but then, it was never meant for us.
